Description
1stbide 5,780 – 4,740 pour nous – to Katonah, NY 10536
France
19th Century
Console, formerly belonging to the Comtesse Jean de Castellane (born Marie-Dorothee Louise de Talleyrand-Perigord), aunt – then sister-in-law – of the famous dandy Boni de Castellane, as evidenced by the sticker on the back of the piece.
A second more modern sticker, handwritten and apocryphal, attributes the design to her nephew Boni and indicates its provenance is the Palais Rose.
Even though this is chronologically possible, Dorothee de Talleyrand-Perigord – Boni’s aunt – having married her cousin Jean de Castellane (Boni’s actual brother!) in 1898, the Palais Rose having been inaugurated in 1902, and the Countess Jean de Castellane having died in 1948, we cannot be sure of anything. Except for the fact that this console belonged to this prestigious family and it may very well have had its place in the Palais Rose at the time.
